Itinerary: 4 Days Desert Tour from Marrakech To Merzouga Desert
Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Ben haddou – Dades Gorge
Merzouga Morocco Tours will pick you up from your riad or hotel at 8 a.m. Our route to the Dadès Gorge takes us via the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2260m), which was built by the Foreign Legion and is the highest pass in Morocco.
The road winds through Berber villages with their rammed-earth houses and leads upwards through the lush countryside with breathtaking views offered by the High Atlas Mountains.
After the pass, the landscape becomes harsher as we head towards the stunning Ait Ben Haddou kasbah, or in this case Ksar (fortified village).
Now a World Heritage site, this is one of the finest and best-preserved examples of earth architecture in Morocco and has served as an appropriate location for many epic films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Alexander.
We then visit Ouarzazate, home to the Atlas Studios and dubbed “the Hollywood of Africa”, where we’ll stop for lunch near the Taourirt Kasbah an impressive palace of over 300 rooms and once owned by the ruthless tribal and political leader, el Glaoui.
We continue on the road that has been dubbed “the road of a thousand Kasbahs,” before stopping at Kalaat M’gouna, “the city of roses” where the roses are renowned for their heady scent and are harvested for the local perfume distillery.
An annual festival is held during the rose harvest in May. The last lap of our journey takes us through more captivating scenery to our hotel in the heart of the Dades Valley.
Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Merzouga
In the morning, we will drive to Merzouga via the Todra Gorge, the highest oasis valley gorge in Morocco. When you arrive in the small town of Merzouga on the edge of the desert, your guide and camels will be waiting to take you across the impressively high, sandy dunes of the Moroccan Sahara.
Aria’s camel trek lasts about two hours and you literally ride into the sunset – an awe-inspiring experience – before arriving at your camp, set up with traditional Berber tents. While your camels and luggage are being attended to, you will be welcomed by a mint tea, the night will be full of stars and the Berber music.
Day 3 : Merzouga desert - Rissani - Alnif - Agdez
Early morning, you will wake up to enjoy the sunrise over the dunes of Erg Chebbi, followed by breakfast in the camp, the camel trek back to the place where they took you, We drive to Rissani, a small Saharan town in southeast Morocco, where we can stop to visit a fossil workshop before we continue to Alnif and junction where we head west to Agdez. Overnight at the Hotel / Riad.
Day 4 : Agdez - Ouarzazate - Tizi ntichka - Marrakech
After breakfast, We head to Draa valley junction where we head north to Ouarzazate after crossing the small volcanic Atlas Mountains we will arrive at Ouarzazate city, the pass point of many African traders to North Morocco.
We continue our road towards Marrakech through the mountains of the High Atlas and the col de Tizi nTichka. Lunch break in the heart of the high Atlas Hills. Drop off at your Marrakech Riad/Hotel and that will be the end of our private visit to Morocco. Have a nice trip back home.
