Itinerary: 5 Days from Marrakech To Merzouga Desert

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains - Ait Ben haddou - Ouarzazate - Dades Gorge

Merzouga Morocco Tours will pick you up from your riad or hotel at 8 a.m. Our route to the Dadès Gorge takes us via the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2260m), which was built by the Foreign Legion and is the highest pass in Morocco. The road winds through Berber villages with their rammed-earth houses and leads upwards through the lush countryside with breathtaking views offered by the High Atlas Mountains.

After the pass, the landscape becomes harsher as we head towards the stunning Ait Ben Haddou kasbah, or in this case Ksar (fortified village). Now a World Heritage site, this is one of the finest and best-preserved examples of earth architecture in Morocco and has served as an appropriate location for many epic films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Alexander.

We then visit Ouarzazat, home to the Atlas Studios and dubbed “the Hollywood of Africa”, where we’ll stop for lunch near the Taourirt Kasbah an impressive palace of over 300 rooms and once owned by the ruthless tribal and political leader, el Glaoui. We continue on the road that has been dubbed “the road of a thousand Kasbahs,” before stopping at Kalaat M’gouna, “the city of roses” where the roses are renowned for their heady scent and are harvested for the local perfume distillery. An annual festival is held during the rose harvest in May. The last lap of our journey takes us through more captivating scenery to our hotel in the heart of the Dades Gorge.

Day 2: Dades Gorge - Todra Gorge - Merzouga

In the morning, we will drive to Merzouga via the Todra Gorge, the highest oasis valley gorge in Morocco. When you arrive in the small town of Merzouga on the edge of the desert, your guide and camels will be waiting to take you across the impressively high, sandy dunes of the Moroccan Sahara.

Aria’s camel trek lasts about two hours and you literally ride into the sunset – an awe-inspiring experience – before arriving at your camp, set up with traditional Berber tents. While your camels and luggage are being attended to, you will be served mint tea, and you will have an amazing night that will be full of stars with Berber Music.

Day 3: Tour Erg Chebbi - Merzouga

you will have breakfast after you watch the sunrise, A 4WD air-conditioned vehicle will then take us on a tour of the area surrounding Erg Chebbi; a sandy stretch of desert where the route was taken by the former Paris-Dakar Rally crosses Morocco’s great dunes. Over 250 m high, with the mountains bordering Algeria in the background. We will stop at a scenic spot from where you can see the whole of Erg Chebbi. Next, we will visit Khamlia, where you can relax with a cup of tea while enjoying a concert of the Gnaoua’s spiritual music, after which we will visit the nomads of the desert and have tea with them. We will then continue to Rissani to visit the big African souk; if you like you can try the Berber pizza. We will return to the hotel in the desert for lunch.

Day 4 : Merzouga - Nkob - Rissani - Agdez

Today we will travel to the Agdez via the village of Tazzarine (featured in the film ‘Babel’), and on to Nkob for lunch. In the afternoon, we will continue along the Draa Valley towards Agdz, then we will have an overnight there in Agdez City.

Day 5 : Agdez - Ouarzazate - Atlas mountains - Marrakech

After breakfast, we head to Ouarzazate through Ait Saoun, a collection of mountains that have Zigzag Roads, then we will arrive at Ouarzazate to visit the cinematography museum of Ouarzazate, and walk in the footsteps of many famous actors. The road then continues along the Ounila valley, with beautiful and prosperous villages, stunning mountains, and views of traditional Berber architecture. Lunch will be in the mountains. We will arrive in Marrakesh at night and it will be the end of our private visit to Morocco. Have a nice trip back home.
