Day Trip from Fes to Meknes and Volubilis
The Day Trip from Fes to Meknes and Volubilis starts after breakfast when we pick you up at your hotel or riad in Fes at 9:00 am.
It’s not a long car trip before Moulay Idriss Saint, a very well-balanced place precariously on the edge of Mount Zerhon with spectacular views through the beautiful Moroccan countryside, including Volubilis. It is a place of pilgrimage for Muslims, as it is believed that those who cannot afford to go to the Hajj in Mecca can visit Moulay Idriss five times in their lifetime to achieve equality of status. The village is beautiful, with many charming souks to visit, although only Muslims can enter the tomb of Idris I of the Idrisid dynasty. He governed from 788 to 791, but was attributed to his dynasty the conversion of Morocco to Islam, and was the great-grandson of the prophet of Islam, Muhammad.
Then there is a short drive to the Roman ruins of Volubilis, called Ouallili which means laurel leaf in the Berber language, and here you are free to explore the well-preserved remains of the city, the triumphal arch, baths, palace, and especially many beautiful mosaics of classical themes of Roman mythology. As one of the most important Roman sites in North Africa, Volubilis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is Volubilis that makes Meknes such a popular destination for tourists and is one of Morocco’s must-see attractions.
Then it is located in the imperial city of Meknes founded as a military camp in the 11th century, but now known as “the Versailles of Morocco”, due to its luxurious design, created to imitate the royal palaces of Paris and Arabia in the 17th century by Sultan Moulay Ismail, who made his capital.
At its peak, Meknes was surrounded by 45 km of walls, in three defensive circles, had twenty city gates, and protected more than fifty palaces. You will see impressive crenelated walls, gigantic city gates carved in Islamic art, and containing pillaged Roman marble pillars of Volubilis, the mausoleum of Moulay Ismail itself, and the royal palace of Dal Makhzen with its royal stables, the magnificent Agdal dam, the nearby granaries, and the dungeon. Meknes has an old and picturesque charm, a more relaxed atmosphere than Fes, and is surrounded by countryside, olive groves, and vineyards. Local souks are recommended for a shopping expedition, as they are rich and varied and often much cheaper than Fes. We will go back to Fes in the Afternoon.
