The houses of Fez, the oldest university in the world, Al Quaraouiyyne, and its ancient medina were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981.

Traditionally, your exploration of the medina should begin at the gate of Bab Boujlloud. The first monument to visit is the vast Medersa of Bou Inania. Continuing along the Talaa Kebira Road (great climb), you will especially admire the Zawiya Tijani (zawiya, shrine of a religious fraternity) and the souk of instrument makers before arriving at the Mazara (shrine) of the former ruler Moulay Idriss located in the place where he made the decision to build the city.

Once you pass the shoe sellers, you will arrive at the En-Nejjarine square and the cabinetmaker’s souk. The magnificently carved foundouk (caravanserai) in the square houses the Museum of Wood Arts and Crafts.
